How long have we been working on the game?

During the convention at Närcon we got many questions about how long we have been working on the game. To answer could be simple, but let’s draw a small timeline while we are at it:

  • A long time ago, there was a project to make an RPG simulator sandbox. This old project was dusted off and used as base to continue on – an RPG, not a strategy game.
  • January 9th 2022, the first steps of World Generation is done. This was part of the game idea for generating a randomly generated and interactive RPG world, starting with the world map.
  • January 11th 2022, the first UV-mapped and modeled house and well is added. The intent is still to make a world generator for an RPG featuring x settlements where the player could walk between them somehow. NPC simulation is also added here, as well as the first iteration of an ocean – a plane.
  • January 15th 2022, suddenly the game has a Construction queue, improvements that can be queued, placeholder trees to decorate the map, and the direction has shifted entirely to the strategy game we are now working on.

TL;DR: a bit over 1.5 years at the time of writing. The game engine we use has been in development to and fro for around 10 years.
